At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

An article describes a night's experience in a typical army camp, while another outlines the history of small pox. The remarks of Mr. Warren on a congressional bill are included. An article describes mail services in regards to contracts with the army. Notes from the habeas corpus case are published by request of the chief justice, as are congressional minutes.
