Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Life of an Overseer, Suppositions for the Times, Extortion & Speculation. A few articles discuss the work of Blacks, including what to do on an "off" year from cotton and the benefit of working in chain gangs, including one article about the life of an overseer. An editorial examines the past emphasis placed on cotton and encourages readers to grow other things, including rice and cattle.
