At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Addressed to "Dear Pitty." Good letter mentions "the little stamp photos" form his mother. Talks about mud and spills, a lady getting stuck in mud. Mentions saloons and gambling: "This place is certainly awful for disreputable characters, you can go into any of the saloons or gambling houses and see the women gambling and mixing with the men and in some of them they run the tables." Mr. McTaggart took photographs of their camp. He loves her. How he learned to make pies by just doing it.
