He writes: "We had correct intelligence from Annapolis the last evening that the votes of Maryland are five for Adams & Pickney -- five for Jefferson & Burr. It has been pretty much conceded by the Gentlemen, here, who arrogate to themselves the appellation of Republican, that Mr. J. cannot this time be President of the U States." He continues, concerning South Carolina, "Mr. Randolph yesterday received a Letter from S Carolina dated the 19th ult. from Pierce Butler, once a democratic Senator, now the democratic successor of Harper -- and a violent & in some respects a powerful Partizan -- 'He says, it is astonishing but Republicanism is dead in South Carolina -- & Pinckneyism triumphant' --.... For myself I re[a]ly expect a federal Vote in South Carolina. [.... ] If the work is done thoroughly -- Adams & Pinkney will be the Chief Magistrates."

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
