At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Four letters (no soldier content), with 3 envelopes. Family may be Jewish, but no significant content on that subject. Letter #1, dated 3 February 1863 in Birmingham, Iowa, is from Sarah W. Braun to Ruthanna Bloom. She misses her family and hopes the rebels do not invade. Letter #2, dated 15 December 1863, from Washington Township, is from [Asahel] Walker & wife to "Son & Daughter." Writes that soldiers have taken all his horses and reports family news. Letter #3, dated 15 April 1864, was written by Lydia F. Lerew to "Brother & sister" and describes the death of a child. Letter #4, dated 10 June 1864, was written by T.A.S. to "sister" and describes sickness in the area and family news.
