At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The rolling of the ship makes it difficult for him to write and to sleep at night. The boat stopped at Sitka, home to the Executive Mansion, Juneau, Yakurat, and Kayak island. [continued on 2/20] He arrived in Valdez the day before and had "never felt so bum after a sea voyage." He has abandoned the idea of a trip into the interior. He has heard tales of families being forced to burn their furniture for heat when they cannot go outside but is skeptical. He congratulates Owen on his progress at the Y.M.C.A., is pleased Carol liked her gift, and tells Ed to concentrate on his studies. He is glad the children miss him and he says they are "just the 'pippins." [continued on 2/21] He finds Valdez to be "like living in a civilized country."
