The image has been touched up [painted] for re-photographing. Inscription on recto: "Retouch with Col's uniform (Confederate)." Inscription on verso: "Genl Beverly Johnson of Md Col Johnson C.S.A 1st Maryland Regt." Additional inscription on verso in F.H. Meserve's handwriting: "Brig. Gen. Bradly T. Johnson CSA. The officer's uniform and rank appear to be Confederate. The three-stars rank indicated a general in the Confederate army. This original salt print was touched up in Brady's gallery and re-photographed in small size upon a negative used to print carte-de-vistes. The small negative is also in The Meserve Collection. F.H.
