Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

View looks down the stream and shows the ruined stone bridge at Manassas battlefield. The structure is mostly intact on both banks of the water, middle span has collapsed. A pile of rubble is visible in the water below. A covered wago, perhaps belonging to the photographer, is in the far left background. Inscription on verso: "Bull Run Bridge."
