At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of Rear Admiral David D. Porter and his staff aboard the U.S.S. Malvern. Porter stands center with arm crossed over chest. Porter was the second officer to be promoted to 'full' admiral in the United States Navy (in 1870). At the extreme left stands Lieut. W.B. Cushing; fifth from left with is arms folded is Lieut.-Commander K.R. Breese; on Porter's right is Lieut-Commander Henry A. Adams, Jr. Graphite inscription on verso: "Gardner XXII 227.
