At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph showing two groups of men posed near a sutlers cabin. The foremost group appears to be officers conversing. The second group stands near the sutlers counter and faces the camera. The sign on the store reads: "A. Foulke Sutler 1st Brigade Hse Arty." Verso notations: "Ordway Gardner Coll." "XI" "164."
