At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of the drum corps of the 61st New York Infantry. Thirteen drummer boys of the 61st NY Infantry posed in a field with their drums. The front row of boys are seated on their drums with the rear row is wearing their drums on harnesses. All of the drummers look away from the camera, thus the image produces a profile of each individual. "XXIII" "520."
