At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of the headquarters of the 1st Brigade, Horse Artillery. Inscription on verso: Mislabeled "Atlanta" Photograph shows a log cabin with a tent used as a roof and A-frame tents on either side of it with brick chimeys. A barrel has been placed ont top of one of the chimneys. Soldiers posed around tent in the center of photograph. The Horse Artillery flag flies on the left bearing cross cannons and the names of battles it has been engaged in. "XI" "634."
