At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph taken of ruins during the Civil War. Civilian sitting in foreground, another standing with white frock coat in middleground, and a third on the other side of the tree from the second. The size of the final figure in contrast to the ruins gives evidence to the massive scale of the structure. Identified in Photographic History of the Civil War as "Mississippi Valley Mill." Purple ink inscription on adhered tag: No 9. "Cannot locate this is a typical war scene burned mill or factory." Inscription on verso: "XI 317." Stamp of the Century Co.
