At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph taken during the Civil War. It shows seven Union Army officers and one sergeant standing in front of and leaning on a porch of a Union barracks. The building is a simple clapboard structure and others like it are visible to both sides and the rear. The men are staring off to the left-hand side. On verso: purple ink inscription on adhered tag: "No. 5 Cannot fix location with certainty. May be Memphis or Corinth. Tenn. 1862-3."; in graphite: "5 Armstead," "X 11" and "5790-31[illegible] War."; stamp of the Century Co. Crops marks on recto.
