At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Retaliates against Bronson, former chief justice of the Supreme Court, who depicted Smith as an example of misconduct in a letter to Mr. Delevan. Discusses the political opinions of Myron Holley Clark, a candidate for Governor (Clark was Governor of New York 1855-1857). Contains a handwritten correction (possibly in Smith's hand) on page one, and cloth tape along crease.
