At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Encloses President Abraham Lincoln's appointment of Brainerd as Arbitrator for the United States for the suppression of the African slave trade (not present). Asks Brainerd to acknowledge receipt and supply his place of birth. Also encloses an official oath Brainerd needs to return if accepting the commission (not present). Signed as Assistant Secretary.
