At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He has been anxious to hear about health problems. His scholarship and reputation have expanded, and he has become a "very conspicuous character among the good people of Alabama." He expects to attend a local Baptist revival meeting. He also plans to start a geography school next season somewhere in the South. While he always tries to be friendly and sociable, the women here are larger and not as intelligent as other places.
