At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A partially printed document attesting to Sarson's discharge from Company C in the 4th Regiment of New Hampshire Volunteers, in which he served a three-year term. Describes Sarsons as a twenty seven year old farmer, 5'7" tall, with a light complexion and hazel eyes. A blank "Oath of Identity" form appears on the verso. Signed, but not filled in, by Lieutenant Richardson in blue ink.
