At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox writes to his wife from Camp McDowell. Reports he's had a terrible tooth-ache and has not been able to sleep for four days. Complains of constant rain. Mentions rumors they are heading to Fairfax. States they have orders for a long march and can carry only their blankets and three days provisions. Comments there are 70,000 union troops along the York river.
