At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the impending Union victory and peace. Describes General Philip H. Sheridan's campaign and reports he is under marching orders and expects to move soon. Declares that he "hope[s] and pray[s] that we may be able to strike the death blow to the rebellion," and includes a prayer for divine assistance. This was the last letter he wrote before his death.
