At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Describes "St. Patrick's Day in the morning." Mentions that there is a great deal of sport in camp. Reports that they are having a review by General George Gordon Meade, Major General Horatio Gouverneur Wright, and Senator Henry Wilson from Massachusetts, so he has no time to write. Letter written on preprinted letterhead: "Headquarters Second Regiment Vermont Infantry, Sixth Corps."
