At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written at Mansion House Hospital. Tells his wife that she should concern herself with her own health before worrying over his. Is very tired from the work that he has done since returning to his regiment. He notes that he is feeling a little bit better, however, he is still not well enough to return to the field. Explains more about the other Wilkinson who was killed only a little ways from him. Writes that his regiment was grateful that he was still alive as they all thought he had been killed. Prays to God every day that he will not be killed. Is glad to hear her mother is doing so well. Wishes he could be with her and their baby.
