Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Letter addressed "Dear friend Joseph." Says they will be shucking corn all day. Reports that Joseph's brother Grier bought four sheep for ten dollars and they are now worth thirty dollars. Informs he went to a church meeting and heard a blind man preach. Letter includes four cutouts of hand-drawn animals.
