At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Joe writes to Bell from Memphis. Responds to her comments on Lord Byron. Admits he is not capable of loving with his whole heart, "But I know I love you more than I can love any one else." Inquires what she would say if he proposed marriage to her. Asks her to "think well" before she answers.
