Accompanied a letter from Dave Allred, Sam's brother, explaining how he got the autographed book and indicating he was sending it to Sam (See GLC02530.02).

Says he has published an article defending Ulysses S. Grant against attacks by Adolphus Richards. Sends a copy of the article, which he has had published anonymously. The article also criticizes General Custer, whom Richards had defended. Discusses a book written on "our command" which both he and Chapman belonged too. The book was written by Bennet Young. Mosby would later refuse to let Young write his biography, GLC03921.56. An artist for the G.A.R. asked Mosby to if he could paint a portrait of him and his officers in June of 1914, GLC03921.46.

Also authored by Lou Henry Hoover. Translated from the first Latin edition of 1556 and published by the Mining Magazine, Salisbury House, London, England. Inscribed by Hoover to Edwin A. Elsbach. De Re Metallica or "On the Nature of Metals" was the standard text on mining for two centuries. Agricola reviewed everything then known about mining, including equipment and machinery, means of finding ores, methods of surveying and digging, assaying ores, smelting, mine administration, and occupational diseases of miners. It also contains descriptions of ores and of strata. Pages uncut.

Jokingly says his life has become wrapped up in books, "I have the Vanity to claim a distant remote kindred to the Family of Searches ... But this drop of Searches blood has drawn up on me a flood of Volumes from all quarters." Says his granddaughter is reading to him from "Tuckers Vision," a book Colman loaned Adams.
