At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tells his brother that they received his photograph: "we received your picture enclosed in your letter and I think it looks a goodeal like you used to look with the exception of your Extensive Mustache and Goatee..." The last page of the letter written on 9 September. Accompanied by a newspaper clipping.
