At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports from Georgetown Heights to his sister. Mentions that he received her letter. Comments that they are experiencing very poor weather, and are very busy preparing for an attack next week. States "we cant even get out now for water with out having a corporal with us. We are penned up here like prisoners. As the camp is a prison itself."
