At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes from Georgetown Heights, enclosing money, which he would like his father to keep at home for him. Reports that he has come off picket and they are fortifying the roads. Comments on how they are expecting an enemy attack in Washington, but "if they do come they will find us prepared to give them a warm reception." Written on stationery with image of the United States Capital on top.
