At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tells his father that they have not been paid yet, but will send the remainder of his money to Uncle Francis. Letter discusses the mild winter they are having and what will happen at the farm in the spring. States that the letter is short because he must go on guard soon.
