At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Contains President George Washington's seventh State of the Union Address. Among other topics, Washington discusses treaties confirmed by the Creek and Cherokee tribes, a treaty of navigation with Great Britain, and a review of the United States military. Contains articles on foreign and domestic affairs, advertisements, and announcements. Fragile, especially near the edges.
