At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Notes his receipt of "a return of Ordnance and Stores for the month of April." Discusses his receipt of a letter from a Mr. Cranch, who he supposes "is now completing the business in his line at Springfield, after which he will go to West Point where there is much for him to do."
