At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports to his uncle on the city of Baltimore at the beginning of the Civil War. Writes that the city has been much quieter except for all the men in uniforms. Informs that "the North troops were marching to the number of 5000, across from Annapolis to Washington, without interruption."
