At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the payment of his life insurance policy and asks Nichols to settle payment. Sends a check for $25 for Nichols to retain until Lillie comes up. Postscript reads, "Office hours from 10 to 2." On stationery printed "U.S. Military Asylum for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. Eastern Branch."
