At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Diary in pen, tintype, and two letters of William O. Rome, soldier in Co. K, 56th New York. The two letters (21 December 1862 and 24 December 1862) are written from Yorktown, Virginia and one contains a list of all the men in Company K and whether they are on duty, sick, discharged, or dead. The diary contains some of Rome's writing from 1861 to 1862.
