At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Camp 6, 129th Regiment. Daily record of army life. A notable entry includes Setember 3rd when the Brigadier General says: "I am not a speechmaker. This is not the business of the soldier, but to fight and obey orders, that is what you are here for..." On Set. 12th, he describes the funeral of Thomas Engle. On Dec.3rd, some men stole a pair of boots and were forced to march around with their hands tied behind their backs.
