Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by William Tudor in the upper left corner (possibly Colonel William Tudor, Secretary of State 1809-1810). Includes a proclamation issued by George Washington, stating that "certain lawless and wicked persons, of the western frontier, in the state of Georgia, did lately invade, burn and destroy, a town belonging to the Cherokee nation ... such outrageous conduct not only violates the rights of humanity, but also endangers the public peace." Offers a reward for apprehension of the criminals. Contains articles regarding foreign and domestic affairs.
