At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Philip sends his condolences for the death of Robert, Jr.'s cousin Johnie; and devotes most of the letter to describing trading plans and instructions. He also notes that a French war seem inevitable, and encourages Robert, Jr. and his brother Philip to assist him in erecting an iron works, which will give them some financial security during troubling times.
