At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Robert informs his father of the death of Mary Winthrop (John Livingston's wife), and also that the Duke of Hamilton and Lord Moon have killed each other in a duel. He mentions that he is waiting news from England regarding the Palatins, and urges his father to take action regarding the money due to him by the government.
