At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Says this will probably be the last letter she will receive from him this cruise. Arrived in Dover from Flushing, Holland yesterday. Says they will leave for Madeira tonight or tomorrow and from there to the U.S. Says he has reason to think their plans will not change. Written while aboard the USS "Kearsarge"
