At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter entailing the call for volunteers and the initial experience of a group of men who answered that call. The author refers to this group of men as a "band of brothers" acting "for the preservation of of ourself and country." The author also mentions a lack of blankets and utensils, but that "like good soldiers," they did not complain. The corners of the letter are torn and the there is some content loss at the top of the page due to discoloration and fading.
