At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs General Hammond that he has sent "a brief narrative of the chief events of interest, medical & surgical, during the campaign of the Army of VA in the summer of 1862" (see GLC02649.01). Apologizes for its sloppy, non-technical presentation and discusses some of its shortcomings. The letter contains several edits.
