At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs him that he is traveling in England and is in a position to be well informed about current conditions there. Will write to him, and leaves the remuneration to him. Advises him not to print his letters until such time as he has done something "very bad or very good." Murray's writings helped popularize New York's Adirondack region.
