At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Captain Barron informs Commodore Barry that he will leave for Philadelphia the following Sunday and will meet Barry thereafter. Reports that Commodore Thomas Truxtun, noted for his success during the Quasi War, "has been Received in this Place with every marke of respect and attention ... " Mentions Hampton Roads, Virginia, a naval port. States "The Bow pnt will be attended to but the dimintions are wanted."
