Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly to General William Wallace Harllee. Pickens, Governor of South Carolina, writes: "I told the council at our last meeting I must go home, and I notify you that I shall go, in all probability tomorrow. I feel every assurance that every thing is safe in the hands of yourself & council." Written on State of South Carolina, Head Quarters stationery.
