At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly to Robert Denniston, who served on the New York State Senate 1841-47. Letter of introduction from Governor Morgan for George D. Lamont of Lockport, a former State Senator from the Niagara, Genesee, and Orleans district of New York. Notes that Lamont hopes to discuss compensation pertaining to his settlement of the "Kingsland matter." Written on State of New York Executive Department, Albany stationery.
