At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written before Yorktown. Barlow writes as Lieutenant Colonel, 61st Regiment, New York Volunteers. Informs Morgan, Governor of New York, that by an order of the War department, that the resignation of
Henry A. Gates, 2nd Lieutenant of Company G, was accepted 17 April 1862. Requests to appoint Cornelius Haggart to fill the vacancy caused by Gates's resignation as soon as possible.
