At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lovejoy, a United States Representative from Illinois, writes to Morgan, Governor of New York. Recommends J. H. Bolles for a position in the 53rd New York Regiment of D'Epineuil Zouaves. Notes that Bolles is a citizen of New York City, and is "a very worthy young gentleman & in every respect well qualified for the position."
