Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Includes account information between Henry Knox and the artillery officers serving under him. Covers February through April. Includes Ebenezer Stevens, Jotham Horton, Henry Burbeck, and Samuel Shaw, among others. Captains pay Knox for breeches, shalloon (a lightweight fabric), and other items (mostly cloth). Bradlee is sometimes spelled "Bradley" in other records from the era.
