At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Page four contains the following: 25 October 1798 signature of Samuel Cooper verifying the sale (Boston, Massachusetts); 1 November 1798 signature of Eli Forbes, attesting that this deed was recorded in Hancock County; 14 December 1798 signature of Lucy Knox releasing her right of dower and power of thirds; 14 December 1798 signature of Samuel Cooper and Benjamin Weld verifying Lucy Knox's statement (Boston, Massachusetts).
