At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discussion of a disagreement between Captain Samuel Nicholson and Colonel George Claghorn. The creator notes, "It appears pretty evident that the secret and real cause of the difference has been a jealousy of power." Apparently Nicholson opposed the admittance of two gentleman and ladies to an unspecified location (possibly the ship). The group Nicholson refused was associated with Claghorn.
